COVID-19 Pandemic Research about Eastern Europe and Eurasia
Cynthia Buckley, Ralph Clem, and I have contributed to two articles published in the journal Problems of Post-Communism related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications for Eastern Europe and Eurasia. The first article, "Pandemic Politics in Eurasia: Roadmap for a New Research Subfield," is a collective piece with several other authors discussing a research agenda for understanding the pandemic's effects. It appeared in the first issue of 2021.
The second article, "The COVID-19 Pandemic and State Healthcare Capacity: Government Responses and Citizen Assessments in Estonia, Georgia, and Ukraine," analyzes the early stages of the pandemic in three countries. The article uses data from the initial version of our Perceptions and Attitudes on COVID-19 in Eurasia (PACE) survey, funded by the Minerva Research Initiative, Woolwine Family Travel Fund, and WVU. We find that general trust in institutions affects how citizens assess their government's responses to the pandemic. The appendix for this article is posted online.
